The Trip - Part 1

My computer is still not quite set up yet. Mom and her husband want to get me my own phone line, so I have no idea when it’ll actually be capable of internet. I hope soon. I hate having to scroll the screen over to look at y’all’s sites. Not to mention, the graphic card on this thing, makes everything pixally and crappy looking (when I know its not). Anyways, here’s part 1. It’s a long story, so it’s easier to post it in parts.

Day 1

Mom flew in that night and I went and picked her up. She was wired because flying, for some reason, raised her anxiety. I almost didn’t even recoginize her. Hey, it’s been almost 4 years since I’ve seen any of my family. The only way I did realize it was her was because Joe (her husband, not my sweety) told me she was carrying a purse with a big D on it. One thing is for sure, she seemed so much better from the last time I saw her.

We went back to the hotel and she kept me up most of that morning before falling asleep. That next day, I handled a bunch of different errands and, well, wore Mom out. Ooops.

Day 2

My sweety’s truck got sent and what a hassle that was. First, he sent me the orders sending him to Ft. Benning. I needed the form that stated his home of origin. So, the vehicle transfer place called the recruiting office (this was a few days earlier) to try and get a copy of his orders from them. Didn’t recognize his last name because the guy that was helping me wouldn’t listen to me on how to say it. Instead he kept spelling it. Joe has an odd last name, but, for his protection, I won’t be stating it here.

Anyways, the recruiting office said he’d been recruited down in South Anchorage. WTF?? He signed up here in fairbanks! I ended up going over there and as soon as I was there, said his last name properly, they knew exactly who I was. Sgt. Erickson (one of the nicest dudes I’ve ever met, and cute to boot too) helped me out. And of course, couldn’t resist the urge to try and recruit me.

I got a memorandum and then took that over and got the truck done over and shipped. That was a major relief.

Day 3

The trip actually begins today. We loaded up the car and took off towards the border. I drove to Tok where we stopped at the visitor’s center and looked around. Mom took over driving until we reached the border. We got through with no hassle and so, CANADA watch out!!

This day was mostly uneventful. I got to drive through tar though… Canada’s Transportation Department does things odd. Or maybe it was just the province of Yukon that does things odd.

We ended up stopping for the night at Destruction Bay. Note to self, look up Destruction Bay and find out why it’s called that. It isn’t connected to the ocean in anyway. We stopped at a dinky motel (there were two motels and like two restraunts and that’s it). As we were going over to the restraurant, Mom pointed to the front passanger’s tire and said it looked like it was going flat. I said, “Nahhh, that’s just how it’s positioned.”

*gives everyone the silent look*

We had dinner, went back to our room and went to bed.

To be continued tomorrow :D Can you guess part of what happened on Day 4?

  4. Wikipedia: “The name is derived from the wind blowing down structures erected by the military during highway construction in 1942-43.”
