Dear creators of the Pentax camera,

Your camera is awesome. Today, I got to run it through heat resistance testing, not on purpose of course. And the results were surprising.

While working in extreme conditions where wind, dust, and sun are usually my primary concerns, I was melting wax to cap the end of a Shelby Tube. The firm I work for is a geotechnical firm, and since I’m the cheapest engineer in their hire at the field office, I’m the lucky one that gets to go out on site and collect samples for testing purposes. Shelby tubes recover undisturbed soil samples by being pushed into the soil, and are required to be capped in such a way to keep the contents from being shook up.

My crew, the drillers, went to get water. I was keeping myself busy by prepping wax and such. To melt the wax, I was doing it on a propane stove with a pot on the back of my tail gate. I stepped away for a mere ten minutes, going into the cab with the AC turned on high. While I was in the truck, a gust of wind came along, knocked the umbrella I was using to create shade with over, and things went up in smoke.

By the time the flames were put out, anything within the vencity of the flames (paper and plastic) were nice melted lumps. While sifting through the melted lumps of unidentifiable things, I pulled out your camera. The viewing screen was slightly buckled and cracked. Putting it near the AC in the truck, I cooled it down, and then attempted to turn it on.

It came on and the viewing screen even worked. It even snapped and stored the picture.

I was seriously amazed.

I had an interesting day. Minus that I’m still slightly shook up and lost 50 feet worth of data and samples. But the cold one I’m drinking right now is definitely soothing my nerves.
