If you’re learning new work and its things you’ve never done, do you think its important to understand what and why you’ve been doing something, instead of just doing it?

100% Yes on the “why” part. But 60% Yes and 40% No on the “what” part. I wouldn’t do anything without knowing why, I may not fully agree with it but knowing why is enough.
July 10th, 2007 at 12:41 amFully understanding what I am doing is different. It may not interest me enough for me to ask questions as to what I am doing and I just do it because I know the “why”.
Example: Understanding why I have written a computer program is essential. Having copied code from other programs and finished the working product I have no interest in understanding what the imported code does exactly, I just know it works.
The dilemma comes when you are asked to do something, knowing exactly what you have to do but not knowing why. Do you change you own principles.
I would like to understand what it is I am asked to learn/do and why so I can explain it to others.
July 10th, 2007 at 10:16 pmAs Rick already said, the why is an absolute necessity. The what is negotiable, depending upon interest and time.
July 11th, 2007 at 7:19 pmYou think you should understand what is going on. That way you are better to catch anything wrong that may happening.
